One month ago, I have shared to you a previous article post about The Top 10 Famous Asian Restaurants in Markham, Scarborough and Richmond Hill. Now, let’s move on and read some contents about drinks in Canada.

Background about Bubble Tea:
Bubble tea is originated from Asia, Taiwan since 1980s. It is also called as boba, or pearl milk tea, or zhenzhu naicha (珍珠奶茶 in Chinese). Why does Asians love to drink bubble tea? Mostly Asians go for milk tea and bubble also known as tapioca. Milk Tea is equivalent to coffee for Asians. Bubble tea stores allow customers to purchase drinks and sit-in for free table service similar to a café. Many of these bubble tea places provide an opened area for customers to stay and hangout with friends and family. In a comparison, a café has a service charge, whereas bubble tea store applies a concept of takeout-drink-based service that does not charge.
What is the trend right now?
The competition of the bubble tea business is unpredictable. In Canada, many brands have already announced that they are originally from Taiwan and now launching their new branches here. However, these marketers concerned about their target audience demographically and geographically. There are more and more Asian ownersopening new locations within the GTA(Greater Toronto Area) especially in Markham. These two cities are identified as Mini China Town according to a high percentage of Chinese population. Based on the stats that I found on Statistics Canada, Markham had total of 152, 090 population of Chinese while the total human population was 328, 966 in 2016. (Statistics Canada, 2016) Pacific Mall is one of the famous attraction of Markham and the purpose of it is that people go for bubble tea there inside the mall with three floors interior setting. Also, this is one of the reasons which makes bubble tea became a symbol or identity of Asian Canadians. Therefore, bubble tea’s Instagram influencers are mainly Asians and it became a part of their daily routine of their life. It is also based on some researched that I have done earlier.
Mainly focus on these four big brands:
- Chatime Canada
- Onezotapioca
- The Alley Canada
- Coco Canada
As a result, these following four brands are famous in Canada as well as globally. The oldest brand is Coco which was founded in Taiwan in 1997 and now has owned more than 3,500 locations internationally. The newest one is Onezo Tapioca that is also founded in Taiwan 4 years ago and owns 9 locations in Canada. Something interesting about this brand is that it was the first bubble tea store who has launched their concept of freshly handmade tapioca with a variety of delicious flavour’s choices.
Social Media Platform:
- Mainly focuses on Instagram and foodie accounts
- Usually Asian influencers became the bubble tea’s brand ambassadors
– e.g. Give away event or insta contest - 3/9 photographs captured Asian models or customers on most brand’s official Instagram accounts

The majority of the bubble tea store’s owners are Asians. Most of the menu were written with a bigger font size in Chinese and a smaller font size in English, meanwhile, the marketers are mainly targeting their products to Asian customers.
Wrap Up:
To summarize this content I have created, my purpose is to share a thought of Asians love bubble tea and non-Asians does not know or drink bubble tea. For bubble tea, there are many types of drinks. We can divide it to categories; milk tea, slush, fresh fruit juice, tea-based, and flavoured-drinks. I always wanted to tell people that bubble tea place sells more than just pearl milk tea. Asians like to order tea-based drinks as well. For instance, Jasmine Tea (green tea based) and Oolong Tea (Red Tea-for Chinese or Black Tea-Western). It is always cool to learn about other cultures and remain the diversity in Canada. Hopefully, you will now have a better knowledge of bubble tea and will be the next customer in line to try it out at least once.
